Most games involve a minimum ante. Some require players to make a blind bet before receiving a hand. Typically, the ante will be less than the amount of money the player must put into the pot. Another common type of bet is the raise. To raise, a player must call the other player’s bet or raise their own bet.

Players can discard up to three cards. If they are planning to bluff, they can place all of their cards face down on the table. They can also check and fold.

A dealer button is often seen on the table. It is usually a white plastic disk. The dealer has the last right to shuffle. Often, the dealer shuffles the cards for the entire hand. Other variant games may have specific rules regarding how the dealer deals the cards.

At the end of the round, a central pot is created with all the bets from all the rounds. All players must either call the bet, raise the ante, or fold. Those who fold lose their bet.

Poker is played worldwide, with a large number of variants. A typical game involves eight or nine players. Each player is assigned a number of chips, typically black, red, blue, or green. Before the game begins, the dealer assigns the values of the chips.
